What Makes an Indian GST Invoice Legally Compliant?

Under the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Act, 2017, and the GST 2.0 framework effective 22 September 2025, issuing an accurate tax invoice is mandatory for registered taxpayers. A compliant invoice allows recipients to claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) without delay and protects suppliers during statutory audits.

Mandatory Fields on a Tax Invoice

  • Supplier Details: Registered business name, trade name, address, and 15-digit GSTIN.
  • Serial Number: Consecutive serial numbering containing only letters, numerals, and special characters (hyphen, slash), unique for the financial year.
  • Date of Issue: Explicit invoice creation date.
  • Recipient Details: Name, address, and GSTIN (if registered) of the recipient.
  • Place of Supply: State name and 2-digit state code determining whether CGST+SGST or IGST applies.
  • HSN / SAC Code: Harmonised System of Nomenclature (for goods) or Service Accounting Code (for services).
  • GST 2.0 Slabs: Applicable tax rate (0%, 5%, 18%, 40%, 3%, 0.25%, or custom rate).

Automatic CGST+SGST vs. IGST Logic

Our generator automatically applies statutory tax allocation rules:

  • Intra-State Supply (Seller State === Buyer State): Tax is split 50% as Central GST (CGST) and 50% as State GST (SGST).
  • Inter-State Supply (Seller State !== Buyer State): Integrated GST (IGST) is levied at the full cumulative rate.
Historical Slab Note: The 12% and 28% slabs were officially removed on 22 September 2025. For past audit reconciliations, select Custom in the line item dropdown to enter historical rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What mandatory details should be included in a GST tax invoice?
A compliant GST invoice typically includes invoice number, invoice date, supplier details and GSTIN, recipient details, place of supply, HSN/SAC codes, itemized taxable values, and applicable tax breakdowns (CGST+SGST or IGST).
How does the generator determine between IGST and CGST/SGST?
The generator compares the supplier state with the recipient place of supply. Intra-state supply applies an equal split of CGST and SGST; inter-state supply applies IGST.
Does this tool automatically convert totals into words?
Yes. Grand totals are automatically converted into words using the Indian numbering system (Lakhs and Crores) for accounting clarity.
Who is required to generate e-invoices with an IRN?
Businesses whose aggregate annual turnover exceeds statutory thresholds set by the GST Council must generate e-invoices with an Invoice Reference Number (IRN) on the official government portal (einvoice1.gst.gov.in).
Are my company logo and client records saved to your servers?
No. Uploaded logos and invoice details are processed client-side in browser memory and are never uploaded to any remote server.
Can I customize line items, HSN codes, and GST rates?
Yes. You can add or remove line items, input item-specific HSN/SAC codes, and select standard or special GST rates per item.
Where can I verify official invoicing rules and GST notification updates?
Official statutory invoicing formats and threshold updates are published on the CBIC portal at cbic-gst.gov.in and the GST portal at gst.gov.in.
