GST 2.0 Rate Slabs Overview
Effective 22 September 2025, the GST Council enacted structural reforms known as GST 2.0. The previous 12% and 28% slabs were officially removed and rationalized into the simplified 4-tier model:
- 0% (Exempt): Fresh food, unprocessed agricultural commodities, healthcare, and education.
- 5% (Merit Goods & Essentials): Packaged staples, transport, and renewable energy equipment.
- 18% (Standard Rate): Most professional services, IT software, commercial goods, and general industry supply.
- 40% (De-merit & Luxury Goods): Luxury automobiles, tobacco, and high-sugar carbonated drinks (replacing the previous 28% slab plus cess).
- Special Slabs: 3% on gold and jewellery; 0.25% on rough diamonds.
The Mathematical Formula Explained
1. Adding GST (Exclusive):
GST Amount = Net Base Amount × (GST Rate ÷ 100)
Total Invoice Value = Net Base Amount + GST Amount
2. Removing GST (Inclusive / Reverse):
Net Base Amount = Total Inclusive Value ÷ (1 + (GST Rate ÷ 100))
GST Component = Total Inclusive Value − Net Base Amount
Worked Real-World Example
Suppose an IT consultant bills ₹25,000 for web design services with 18% standard GST for a client within the same state:
- Net Base Price: ₹25,000.00
- Total GST (18%): ₹25,000 × 0.18 = ₹4,500.00
- Central GST (CGST - 9%): ₹2,250.00
- State GST (SGST - 9%): ₹2,250.00
- Final Gross Invoice: ₹29,500.00
Common Invoicing Mistakes to Avoid
- Using Obsolete Slabs: Invoices issued after 22 September 2025 should not apply the old 12% or 28% rates unless specifically dealing with transitional credit adjustments for historical contracts.
- Subtracting Percentage Directly from MRP: Calculating 18% of ₹11,800 gives ₹2,124, subtracting which gives ₹9,676—this is mathematically incorrect. Always divide the MRP by 1.18 to isolate the base.
- Interstate vs Intrastate Confusion: Intra-state supply splits tax equally between CGST and SGST. Inter-state supply levies IGST at the full rate.
