How to Calculate Days Between Two Dates Accurately
Calculating the elapsed time between two calendar dates seems deceptively simple, but irregularities in the Gregorian calendar introduce complexities: months range from 28 to 31 days, leap years add an extra 29th of February, and statutory deadlines may differ on whether the terminal date is included or excluded.
Inclusive vs. Exclusive Counting Conventions
One of the most frequent sources of contractual and legal dispute is date boundary interpretation:
- Exclusive Counting (Default): Counts elapsed 24-hour periods between two milestones. For example, Monday to Tuesday is counted as 1 day.
- Inclusive Counting: Both the starting calendar day and concluding calendar day are counted as whole service days. In car rentals, hotel bookings, or court notice deadlines, Monday through Tuesday is billed as 2 full calendar days. Simply toggle the "Include end date" checkbox to apply inclusive counting.
Worked Real-World Examples
From Jan 1, 2023 to Dec 31, 2023 (exclusive) = 364 days (inclusive = 365 days). In 2024 (a leap year containing Feb 29), the count is 365 days (exclusive) and 366 days (inclusive).
An employee tenders their resignation on March 15th with a 90-day contractual notice period. Adding 90 calendar days brings their final working date to June 13th.

- Banking & Intercompany Interest: Determining exact accrued daily interest on short-term corporate loans and treasury bills.
