Determining your exact chronological age requires more than a simple year subtraction (such as 2026 minus 1995). Because individual calendar months comprise 28, 29, 30, or 31 days, and every fourth year introduces a leap day (February 29), true precision demands day-by-day and month-by-month rollover arithmetic.

The Borrowing Algorithm Explained

When subtracting birth date elements from target date elements:

1. Days: If the target day is smaller than the birth day, we "borrow" the total days in the month preceding the target date.
2. Months: If the target month is smaller than the birth month, we borrow 12 months from the target year.
3. Years: Subtract the birth year from the adjusted target year.

Worked Real-World Example

Suppose an applicant was born on August 25, 1998, and must submit their age as of November 6, 2026 for a government civil services examination:

• Target Date: 2026-11-06 | Birth Date: 1998-08-25
• Target day 6 is less than 25. We borrow the days in October (31 days). 6 + 31 = 37. Now, 37 − 25 = 12 Days.
• Target month drops from 11 to 10. 10 − 8 = 2 Months.
• Target year: 2026 − 1998 = 28 Years.
• Final Exact Age: 28 Years, 2 Months, and 12 Days.
